Secretariat birthday bash moves to Ashland
Organizers of the event to mark the birthday of 1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat have moved the location to Randolph-Macon College in Ashland.
The event, which also will mark the 40th anniversary of stable mate Riva Ridge’s wins in the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes, will be held March 31, and reservations are required by March 28.
Originally, the birthday bash was going to be held at The Meadow Event Park in Doswell, home of the State Fair of Virginia and where Secretariat was foaled. The State Fair has gone bankrupt, and all events at The Meadow Event Park have been canceled for that venue.
Some activities originally planned in conjunction with the birthday event have been canceled or modified.
Penny Chenery, owner of Secretariat, now will not attend the event in Ashland. She originally had planned to participate at the Caroline County event as she did a year ago.
There will be two programs, one at 1 p.m. and a second at 3 p.m. They will feature welcoming remarks and a discussion about the history of The Meadow by Chenery’s daughter, Kate Chenery Tweedy, and Leeanne Ladin, co-authors of “Secretariat’s Meadow: The Land, The Family, The Legend.”
Visitors also will be able to meet former grooms and jockeys of The Meadow, and the event will feature continuous showings of the most famous races of Secretariat and Riva Ridge.
The co-authors will be available to sign copies of their book, and Secretariat memorabilia will be available for purchase.
The event will be held at Andrews Hall on the college campus. Tickets are $5 at the door.
To register in advance, e-mail name, number of tickets and which program
(1 p.m. or 3 p.m.) to Ladin at email@example.com by March 28.
