Chargers down Lady Cavs for championship

Chancellor’s Jo-Ellen Cabrera pitched a no-hitter as the Charger softball team defeated Caroline 7-2 in last night’s championship game of the Battlefield District tournament.

The Lady Cavaliers are still in post-season play, however. They earned a berth in the Region 1 playoffs by winning a tournament semifinal game the night before.

With outstanding fielding, Caroline led 2-0 in the top of the fifth inning. The Chargers fought back and got a run of their own in the bottom of the fifth to trail 2-1.

The Chargers blew the game open in the sixth inning, scoring six runs on five hits.

Caroline went down meekly in order in the final inning, and the Chargers erupted in a celebration.

“I couldn’t be prouder of these young ladies,” said Caroline coach Greg Trainum after the game.

Caroline’s Abby Morrow, who pitched a no-hitter the night before, gave up six hits. She struck out three and walked none. Morrow retired 11 of the first 12 batters she faced.
