The Caroline High School boys 4×100 relay team won second place at the state outdoor track meet.
With their second-place finish at the state meet, the relay squad of Duane Fields, Alvester Coleman, Bevontae Morris, and Aasan Pankey earned the right to compete in the New Balance Nationals in Greensboro, N.C. June 14-16.
The New Balance Nationals, sponsored by the National Scholastic Sports Foundation, is one of the most prestigious post-season track and field championships for high school athletes and has been a showcase for America’s best elite and emerging high school talent annually since 1991.
The Caroline boys outdoor track team placed 17th overall in AA competition at the state meet at Harrisonburg on Friday and Saturday of last week. More than 92 AA schools participated in the state meet.
Two members of the team recorded top-10 finishes in individual events. Freddie Romero-Baker won sixth place in pole vault, and Pankey placed seventh in the 100-meter dash.
The girls team did not score in the first eight places. Jessica Toliver turned in the best finish, ninth place in the 100-meter high hurdles.
