DOSWELL — Nothing quite beats winning a blue ribbon from the State Fair of Virginia in arts, homegrown produce, or baked goods.
But the deadline for entries is just around the corner: Sept.7.
The State Fair will open Sept. 28 and continue through Oct. 7 at Meadow Event Park in Caroline County.
Traditional arts, crafts and crop competitions will return, said Lorene Blackwood, director of programs. They will include competitions in fresh produce, pumpkins, sewing, needlework, photography, cooking and baked goods. A new category this year will be the State Fair Special Cookie Competition, which will allow children to enter with their parents, grandparents and guardians.
“We know how popular these events are with our public,” Blackwood said. “Nothing quite beats winning a blue ribbon from the State Fair of Virginia to celebrate your skills.”
Links for the forms to enter adult and youth competitions can be found at StateFairVa.org/competitions. Currently the forms must be printed and mailed with the appropriate entry fee. An online entry option will be available soon.
New announcements related to this year’s fair are being posted on the State Fair’s website and Facebook page.
Fair officials also have been finalizing farm animal exhibitions, including the popular Young MacDonald’s Farm exhibit and dairy cow birthing area. There will be exhibitions of beef cattle, rabbits and chickens. Visitors to the fair will be able to see farm animals throughout the event’s run.
