SPOTSYLVANIA – The Caroline High School football team used its last possession of the game to snatch a 26-22 win over Spotsylvania.

With only 3:45 left on the clock and starting on their own 16-yard line, quarterback Curtis Leacock threw a 30-yard pass to Bevontae Morris and a 21-yard pass to DaQuan Pollard to move the Cavaliers down the field.

Chad Boxley ended the drive with a 9-yard breakaway run to score the winning touchdown at 2:49, and the Caroline defense held off the Knights for the victory on Friday  night last week.

In a game married by penalties on both sides, Caroline improved to 1-0 in the Battlefield District and 2-2 overall; their two wins already equal the number of wins the Cavaliers had in each of the past two seasons. The Knights fell to 0-1 and 1-3 overall.

Morris had a productive night. He caught four passes for 85 yards and a pair of touchdowns from Leacock. On defense, he also made a key play, breaking up a Spotsylvania pass play on fourth down before Caroline’s final drive.

Besides the rushing touchdown by Boxley, Leacock also scored on a 2-yard keeper.

Leacock was 15 of 27 passing for 244 yards and the two scores; he was intercepted twice.

Pollard, the team’s elite receiver, led the team in receiving with eight catches for 121 yards.

Keyshawn Johnson paced the Cavalier ground game; he carried the ball 13 times for 73 yards.

In the second half, except for one three and out in the fourth quarter, the Cavaliers scored each time they had the ball.

With just over 8 minutes remaining in the third quarter, Leacock led Caroline on a drive that began on the Cavalier 28-yard line. He scored the 2-yard keeper on third and goal, but the failed point after attempt left the Knights in front, 14-13.

On the ensuing possession by the Knights, Caroline recovered on the Spotsylvania 20-yard line.  Morris caught a touchdown pass from Leacock on the next play as Caroline went ahead 19-14 at 3:58.

Caroline’s only score of the first half came on a drive that started at their 20-yard line at the end of the first quarter. Leacock threw an 11-yard TD pass to Morris with 8:08 left in the half to tie the score at 7-7.

However, Spotsylvania’s Charlie Petitt broke through the Caroline goal line defense to score a touchdown with 8 seconds left and give the Knights a 14-7 lead at intermission.

After spotting Caroline a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter, the Knights put together a drive to take a slim lead late in the final quarter. Running backs Clinton Ferguson and Nate Haynes helped move the ball to the Caroline 24-yard line, and quarterback Ashten Dixon threw a touchdown pass to Haynes. With a 2-point conversion, the Knights took a 22-19 lead in the fourth quarter.

The Knights were slapped with 20 penalties for 125 yards while the Cavaliers were assessed with 17 penalties for 72 yards.

This week the Cavaliers host Eastern View on Friday night. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
