Hunt club hosts event for military
Members of Mattaponi Hunt Club turn dogs loose during hunt hosted for wounded and injured members of the military.
Mattaponi Hunt Club treated members of the military to a day of hunting in Caroline County on Saturday of last week.
It was the fifth year the club has sponsored its Wounded Warriors Hunt for wounded and injured members of the military.
The event also is supported by the Upper Caroline Volunteer Fire Department as well as a number of businesses.
The group of about two dozen servicemen gathered at the Gander Mountain store in Fredericksburg Friday afternoon where they were treated to gift cards and discounts on hunting-related products and supplies.
After shopping, they went to the Fredericksburg KOA campground, located off Guinea Station Road in nearby Spotsylvania County, where they were provided cabins and campsites.
That night, the group was treated to a dinner at the fire department prepared by women associated with the hunt club.
The next morning, the servicemen returned to the fire station for a hot breakfast. They received a bag lunch and some last-minute instructions, then were transported to the hunting area in western Caroline. The men were placed on hunting stands with a companion from the club and spent the day hunting as dogs were turned loose to chase deer.
That night the group returned to the fire station for a banquet. The servicemen also were recognized with awards and certificates.
