Jazmen Moore

Caroline's Jazmen Moore sprints to the basket for a layup against Essex; she led the team in points (21), assists (7) and steals (6).

The Caroline High School Lady Cavaliers basketball team remained undefeated with victories over King William and Essex last week.

The Lady Cavs traveled to King William on Tuesday where they were victorious against the Lady Cavs of King William, 68-37.

Junior Bo Hayes led Caroline with 15 points. Other double-digit scorers included sophomore Jazmen Moore, 13, sophomore DeAndra Spurlock, 12, and freshman Jayla McNeil, 12.

King William’s Briana Branch scored a game-high of 17 points but was the only one on her team to score in the double digits.

Caroline completed a season sweep of the Essex on Thursday, defeating the Lady Trojans 57-34.

Moore led the team in points, assists, and steals; she scored 21 points and collected seven assists and six steals. Hayes recorded a double-double, scoring 13 points and pulling down 13 rebounds.

Essex took an early lead until Caroline went on a 13-point run in the first quarter. Moore started the run with a jump shot for a basket and closed it out with a free throw. Spurlock contributed 4 points in the run. By intermission the Lady Cavs held an 11-point advantage.

Caroline opened the third quarter with a 9-0 run, and Moore added five points in that stretch. The Lady Trojans scored only 6 points in the quarter as Caroline opened up a 21-point lead.

The Lady Cavs tallied another 9-point run in the fourth quarter that was sparked with a free throw by Moore and led by Hayes’ four points.

Caroline coach Tim Marshall credited the entire team with the victory but singled out Moore for praise.

“My point guard, Jazmen Moore, was the key to the victory,” said Marshall. “She is very young and determined,” he added, and has taken over while senior Shannon Mosby has been out recently with an injured knee.

The Lady Cavs shot 32 percent from the field, including 42 percent from 3-point range, and shot 47 percent from the foul line.

The junior varsity was also victorious in both games last week, defeating King William 42-5 and beating Essex 47-15.

Mosby and freshman Hope Toliver, who suffered an ankle sprain against Essex and left the game, were both expected to return to action this week.

The Lady Cavs were scheduled to host King William on Monday this week, then begin Battlefield District play by visiting Courtland on Tuesday and hosting Chancellor on Friday.

Next week Caroline hosts Spotsylvania on Tuesday and travels to James Monroe on Friday.
