The Caroline Family YMCA has begun enrolling members even while the new building begins to take shape at Ladysmith Village.
The YMCA, part of the Rappahannock Area YMCA, has been operating out of a storefront office in Ladysmith for some time.
The new YMCA already has enrolled 85 members, according to Keith Marine, who was named in September to run the Caroline YMCA.
His goal is to have about 500 members by the time the YMCA opens, said Marine.
The YMCA currently is offering a membership special. The joining fee, which ranges from $35 to $100, will be waived for new members who sign up by Dec. 31.
The YMCA also is making a special offer to Caroline County employees, waiving the joining fee and reducing membership rates by 20 percent.
The YMCA will begin the process of hiring staff in January, said Marine, who already has received resumes from interested candidates. Next month he will begin reviewing resumes, he said.
The YMCA will have a staff of about 75 people, estimated Marine, with about 10 percent of those being full-time employees.
Construction work began earlier this year, although the processes of excavating, building the foundation, installing plumbing and electrical infrastructure, and other tasks have consumed months. Workers recently have begun building walls and constructing concrete pads.
The new building is expected to be finished and the new YMCA operating in May or June, said Marine.
The Caroline Family YMCA will feature an aerobics studio, childcare area, gymnasium, lap swimming pool, therapeutic pool, wellness center, spinning room, youth classrooms, locker rooms and lounge.
It will offer programs and activities comparable to what is offered at the other Rappahannock AREA YMCA facilities, said Marine. Those services, which target age groups from children to senior citizens, include swimming lessons, water-based exercise and therapy sessions, fitness training, team sports, and more. It also will offer childcare services for parents while they work out.
Pilot fitness programs will be offered at the YMCA’s storefront location in 2013 before the new facility opens.
Monthly membership rates range from $25 for students 13 and older to $80 for a family. The YMCA also offers financial assistance to people to help pay for memberships and programs.
People interested in joining may visit the storefront office, which is currently open on an intermittent basis, in the Shops at Ladysmith shopping center on Jefferson Davis Highway just north of the intersection of Ladysmith Road or contact Marine for an application.

Marine, who earned a bachelor’s degree in leadership and management from the University of Mary Washington, served YMCA boards for over 10 years. He began by serving on the board of the Fredericksburg YMCA but later moved to the board of the Rappahannock Area YMCA when the organization began to expand and add locations. As a member of the board of the umbrella organization, Marine held positions of president, vice president, and treasurer.
A partner in a Fredericksburg area business that provides shipping services, Marine resigned his board seat in April began working as a part-time employee of the Rappahannock Area YMCA in June. His duties have included marketing as well as development of the Caroline Family YMCA.
