Both Caroline High School basketball teams narrowly survived their first-round games in the Battlefield District Tournament last night.
The Cavaliers, playing at home, squeaked by Spotsylvania 68-67. The Lady Cavaliers edged host Chancellor 51-49.
The Cavaliers advance to play No. 1 seed Culpeper in the semifinals at King George on Wednesday.
The Lady Cavaliers play again tonight, taking on host Courtland in a semifinal game.
The Cavaliers led 54-47 after three quarters, but Spotsylvania rallied to pull ahead in the fourth quarter. Caroline edged ahead with about a half-minute to play, and a couple of defensive stops helped nail down the win.
Aaron Lewis scored 13 points to lead four Caroline players in double figures. Bevontae Morris and DaQuan Pollard each added 12 points, and Aason Pankey added 11 points.
A layup by Jazmen Moore gave the Lady Cavaliers a 2-point lead, and Chancellor was unable to tie in the final seconds.
Moore led Caroline with 15 points. Bo Hayes added 14 points and pulled down 20 rebounds, and Hope Toliver added 12 points.
