Culpeper tops Caroline in semifinal; Cavs qualify for regional playoffs
KING GEORGE – Culpeper knocked off Caroline in the Battlefield District Tournament last night, but the Cavaliers have qualified for the regional playoffs.
Nik Stewart scored 20 points to lead three Blue Devils in double figures as Culpeper defeated Caroline 64-59 in a tournament semifinal game.
It was Culpeper’s third win over Caroline this season as they improved to 22-9. Each time, though, the Blue Devils had to rally to overcome a double-digit lead by the Cavaliers.
Caroline jumped out to a 18-6 lead after one quarter and still led 30-27 at halftime. In the third quarter the Cavaliers built their lead back up to 9 points.
The Blue Devils pulled ahead in the fourth quarter on a 3-pointer by Bruce Mosley to make it 55-51 with 2:35 left.
Deion Scott scored 23 points to lead the Cavaliers, but he was the only Caroline player to score in double figures.
The Cavaliers, now 13-9 overall, will meet Courtland in a consolation game Friday night.
Caroline will begin play in the Region 1 playoffs next week.
