Cavs upset Courtland in regional matchup
It was a battle royal between the Caroline High School Cavaliers and the host Courtland Cougars Tuesday night.
The Cougars beat the Cavaliers three times this season.
In the fourth matchup, though, Caroline would not be denied.
Deion Scott (No. 23) scored a game-high 23 points to lead Caroline to an upset Region 1 quarterfinal win over Courtland.
Deion Scott scored a game-high 23 points to lead Caroline to a 64-61 Region 1 quarterfinal victory over Courtland. DaQuan Pollard added 13 points, and Will Howard, 12 points.
It was Caroline’s first regional playoff victory in nearly 10 years.
How much magic do the Cavaliers have left? They will play host Chancellor in the Region 1 semifinal game 7 o’clock Thursday night. If they win, they will advance to the Region 1 championship game Friday night.
Caroline and Courtland were tied at 30-30 at halftime. When the Cougars went to a zone defense in the second half, the Cavaliers adjusted on offense while their quick, scrappy defense gave the Cougars fits.
“When they went to the zone, we just adapted,” said Pollard. “None of us wanted this to be our last game.”
The Cougars didn’t help themselves, failing to convert 12 of their free throw opportunities.
Caroline held Courtland’s Eric Washington to only 7 points. Travis Mickens led Courtland with 17 points and center Terrell Robinson added 12 points.
