RAPPAHANNOCK ACADEMY – A Bowling Green man was killed early today when the car he was driving on U.S. 17 crossed into the path of an oncoming tractor-trailer.
The victim was identified as Joseph R. Jones, 27, of Duck Lane.
He was driving a 2007 Hyundai Accent north on U.S. 17 when he crossed into the southbound lane and struck a 1996 Peterbuilt tractor-trailer, reported Sgt. Thomas Molnar of the Virginia State Police.
After striking the truck, the car ran off the right side of the highway and struck a tree, according to Molnar. Jones, who was not wearing a safety belt, was ejected from the car and died at the scene.
A passenger in the car, 37-year-old Heather Peters, suffered minor injuries and was taken via ambulance to Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg.
The accident occurred near the intersection of Hicks Landing Road, which is north of Port Royal.
The truck driver, identified as Trent A. Moss, 24, of Dunnsville, and an unidentified passenger in the truck were not injured.
Alcohol was considered a factor in the crash, said Molnar.
The highway was closed for about four hours until the accident scene was cleared.
The investigation into the accident is continuing.
