Burial was legal, Lippa indicates

The burial of suspected Boston Marathon bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev in a cemetery in Caroline County apparently was legal and carried out properly, according to Caroline Sheriff Tony Lippa.

His office reviewed documents related to Tsarnaev’s burial last week in a private Muslim cemetery in the Dawn community, Lippa said in a statement issued by his office Saturday night.

Those documents included the death certificate, burial permit, a permit from Massachusetts authorities to transport the remains, and others.

“It would appear that all paperwork is in order at this point,” said Lippa, who was assisted in the review by Bowling Green Mayor Davis Storke, owner of Storke Funeral Home.

He is still waiting for return phone calls from the Islamic Society of Greater Richmond, Islamic Funeral Services, and Worcester Police Chief Gary J. Gemme, added Lippa.

It now appears that Caroline County will be indelibly and unfortunately linked to the Boston Marathon bombings, noted Lippa.

“Like the rest of America, the citizens of this county were outraged by the Boston Marathon bombings,” he said. “We too mourned for the loss of life, prayed for the survivors, and offered our support. Unfortunately we now find ourselves forever connected to this tragedy in the most unsavory way – as the final resting place of one of the alleged terrorist.”

There were no incidents at the cemetery reported Friday night, according to Lippa. However, he indicated the sheriff’s office would not out of its way to provide security at the cemetery.

“The Sheriff’s Office will offer the same amount of protection, no more and no less, to this site as any other cemetery in Caroline County,” said Lippa. “There are many options available for the owners of the cemetery, at their own cost, to provide additional security should they choose to do so.

“The Caroline County Sheriff’s Office cannot, nor will we, divert our limited resources towards the protection of a single gravesite, especially one belonging to that of a terrorist,” Lippa continued.
