Spotsylvania man drowns

RUTHER GLEN – A 22-year-old Spotsylvania man drowned in Lake Land’Or, the Caroline County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The victim was identified as De’onte Clayton Jones.

Jones was swimming in the lake with three companions Tuesday evening, and they were returning to the beach area when he disappeared, said Maj. Scott Moser of the Caroline Sheriff’s Office.

His friends searched in the water for him, then notified a lifeguard at the nearby pool. The lifeguard also searched to no avail.

The friends called the sheriff’s office about 6:51 p.m. Deputies arrived and entered the water but could not find Jones.

The dive team of the Spotsylvania Fire-Rescue Department was summoned to the scene and recovered the body of Jones about 9 p.m., said Moser.

The victim’s body was removed to the State Medical Examiner’s office in Richmond, and the incident remains under investigation, said Moser.
