Log truck driver killed in crash

The driver of a log truck was killed in an accident in Sparta Friday morning, Virginia State Police reported.

The 1991 Freightliner tractor-trailer, carrying a load of pine logs, was traveling south on Passing Road when it ran off the left side of the highway, said Sgt. Thomas Molnar. After running off the highway the load shifted, and the logs struck the rear of the cab. The accident occurred about 7/10-mile north of the intersection of Sparta Road about 7:30 a.m.

The driver, who was wearing a seatbelt, was injured and died at the scene, according to Molnar. He may have suffered a medical condition, added Molnar.

The body of the driver was transported to the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond to determine the cause of death.

The driver’s identity was being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The crash investigation is on-going with the assistance of the Virginia State Police Motor Carrier Safety Unit.
