Pollard named male athlete of the year

DaQuan Pollard has been named the high school male athlete of the year by The Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star newspaper.

The Caroline High School standout in football, basketball, and track, who recently graduated, polled 28 points and four first-place votes in the balloting. Pollard edged out Chancellor High School’s Chris Holmes, who received 26 points.

Pollard earned eight all-Group AA medals in track and field. His crowning achievement was winning the state championship in high jump in outdoor track with a 6-foot, 8-inch school record leap. He also won third in the long jump, fifth in the 110-meter hurdles, and sixth in the triple jump in the state outdoor meet, and Pollard was a member of the 4×400 relay squad that won second place with a school record time.

In football, Pollard was a unanimous all-Battlefield District selection at kick returner. In the 2012 season he caught 30 passes for 532 yards in seven games before injuring an ankle. Pollard also played defensive back and punted.

In basketball, Pollard was a defensive specialist, usually called on to guard the opposing team’s best player. He was named to the all-Battlefield District second team, averaging 11 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 3.5 steals per game.
