Will you take the plunge for good cause?

Are you ready to plunge into Lake Land’Or this winter for a good cause?

The annual Wright’s Chapel Polar Bear Plunge will be held at the lake community’s beach Feb. 4.  The brave souls will head into the chilly water at 10 a.m.

Registration is under way for the charitable fundraising event. Registration packets are due by Jan. 15 in order to guarantee a t-shirt, although registration up to the day of the event will be permitted.

The event, organized by Wright’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Ladysmith, was started in 2006 in response to rising costs of home heating. The motto for the event is, ‘We get cold so others stay warm.’

Participants who take the plunge are asked to solicit donations from family, friends, neighbors, co-workers and others. This year the goal is for each person who takes the plunge to collect $500.

In the first two years, about $4,000 was raised for to help the less fortunate pay their heating bills. The Polar Bear Plunge was expanded in 2008 to include other churches and community leaders. Forty-six people took the plunge last year, helping to raise $18,000.

Since its inception the event has generated more than $70,000. The funds have been distributed to the needy through participating churches, the county’s department of social services, St. Mary’s Food Bank, and Glory Outreach.

Given the weak economy, there is still plenty of need for emergency assistance, according to organizers. This year’s funds will be distributed through participating churches, the St. Mary’s Food Bank, and Glory Outreach, a charitable organization in Bowling Green.

Registration packets are available at Wrights Chapel at 8063 Ladysmith Road, Ruther Glen, or visit www.wrightschapel.org for details. Online donations are also accepted. There is no fee to register.

In addition, Pizazz Hair Studio in Ladysmith will support the event by giving haircuts for donations to the plunge from 4-6 p.m. Jan. 20; minimum donation is $15 per person.
