The Caroline Cavalier football team took one hard on the chin Oct. 18 by losing to the host team, the Courtland Cougars, 55-20.
The Cavaliers exhibited an on-again, off-again performance against a Courtland offense and defense that overpowered the Cavaliers.
Courtland approached last Friday night without extraordinary ability, but instead with discipline. There were no players who stood out as much as missed tackles and passes on the Caroline side of the ball.
“We have a disciplined group of players here,” commented Courtland Coach J.C. Hall. “When disciplined players are told to do something, they do it. We had a game plan and the discipline to stick to it.”
Although Caroline received the initial kickoff and moved the ball down the field for a touchdown, it was the Courtland offense that controlled the game, backed up by the defense which seemed to be everywhere on the field. Courtland’s running game ruled as the Cougar running backs ran with abandon through the Caroline defense.
The Caroline receiving corps did little to help the situation. Sophomore quarterback Rasharrd Harris kept up the pace with his passing game, but balls that should have been caught were instead dropped. Although Harris threw for 205 yards, he could have done much more as the Caroline receivers clearly out-maneuvered the Courtland defenders covering them.
Anton Jenkins closed out the scoring for the Cougars with two close runs in the fourth quarter, leaving the score at 55-20. The last came with only 3:53 remaining in the game on a nine-yard run into the end zone with a failed point after the touchdown (PAT) by Ryan Adams, which followed a two-yard plunge by Jenkins two minutes earlier, where the PAT by Adams was successful.
With only 7.1 seconds at the end of the third quarter, Victor Greene scored from two yards out bringing the widening the margin with the PAT to 42-20. Caroline held Courtland scoreless the third quarter until the 3:23 mark in the period when Nick Grant completed a 25-yard pass play from Jabari Allen into the end zone. Adam’s PAT opened up the scoring between the Cougars and Cavaliers to 35-13.
Courtland opened their scoring in the first period with a 3-yard dash into the end zone by Jenkins following an interception of a tipped pass by Harris. Adams kicked the first of many PATs. At the end of the initial quarter, George Cheetham added to the scoring with a 19-yard scoring run. Joe Tyson’s run added the two point conversion.
Cheetham remained active in the second period with a one-yard dive for a touch down. Adams’ PAT gave Courtland a 22-7 lead. The final score of the first half came from a two-yard touch down run by Greene with only 21.2 seconds remaining on the clock.
Caroline scored only once in the second half as Chad Boxley took the ball in a characteristic one-yard plunge into the end zone. Brando Garcia’s PAT marked the end of Cavalier scoring at 20 points for the night.
Caroline struck first with ease on their initial possession as Boxley bulled his way through the defense of Courtland to take an early lead with Garcia’s PAT of 7-0. With 9:24 remaining in the first half, Tyler Dudley Paige was the recipient of Harris’ only touch down pass of the evening. The PAT by Garcia was not successful and the score was 22-13.
“We have to learn to catch the ball,” remarked Caroline Coach Jeremiah Ross. “We need to work on things like missed tackles. When we executed, we moved the ball, but there were too many times when we went three and out. You can’t do that with a team as competitive as Courtland.”
