The Lady Cavs varsity basketball team was reduced down to only three players on Jan. 13 and that allowed Northumberland High to beat Caroline High, but only by 3 points.
This marked the end of a nine-game winning streak that began on Dec. 5 with a win over Dinwiddie High. The Lady Cavs had beat Northumberland on Dec. 19.
The Lady Cavs’ home game on Jan. 13 went into double over-time and the final score was 74 to 71. Bo Hayes and Hope Toliver fouled out during the fourth quarter.
At the end of the fourth quarter, the score was tied at 64, sending the game into overtime. Halfway into overtime and with only five players for CHS, the game stayed close until a sudden injury and foul caused a shift in the game tempo.
The Cavs’ Lexi Brown got injured, and Jayla McNeill committed a foul and fouled out, leaving the Cavs with three players: Jazmen Moore, Delikequa Parker and KeAsia Butler. They played well against Northumberland’s five players and even went into a second overtime.
It was 71 for Caroline and 73 for Northumberland until a forced turnover against the Cavs gave Northumberland the ball. Northumberland was running down the clock until a forced foul was committed. They were then shooting in a double bonus and made one shot, bringing the score to 71-74 with 1.9 seconds left and no time to shoot.
That ended the game but they fought and hustled hard all of the game. Coach Marshall said he was pleased with the hustle from Jazmen, KeAsia, and Delikequa and was shocked that they were playing three-on-five and still maintaining a close score.
Hope was the lead scorer with 16 points, 12 rebounds and 5 blocks. Other Scorers: Jazmen with 13, KeAsia with 9, Lexi with 11, Delikequa with 8, Jayla with 5 and Bo with 9.
On Dec. 10, the Lady Cavs played James Monroe High in Fredericksburg. The 53-48 win over James Monroe gave the Lady Cavs their ninth consecutive win.
The Friday night game stayed close until the end. Jazmen, a starter for the Cavs, sustained a knee injury during the first half of the game. Coach Marshall expressed concern that he would have to play with only six players but she was up and ready to play by the second half.
Hope led the team with 12 points, 12 rebounds and seven blocks. Jazmen came up behind her with 11 points and 2 assists. Delikequa Parker kept them in the game with two 3-pointers, scoring a total of 10 points and providing 2 assists.
Other scorers were KeAsia with 4, Lexi with 3, Jayla with 7, Bo with 6.
