The Caroline High School Junior Varsity Lady Cavs basketball team defeated the James Monroe High Yellow Jackets 25-24 in the Battlefield District championship game on Feb. 17.
It was an even sweeter victory because in the process of winning the championship, the CHS junior varsity girls beat the very team that had beat them only a week earlier.
A team effort made this a success but the key players were Nyasia Brown (defense), Rejon Hawkins (offense), MyKaila Smith (assist, offense) and Devyn Mauck (scoring).
The coaching staff of Caroline High School congratulated the JV Lady Cavs for winning the first place trophy against James Monroe High School, said Coach Harry C. Mosby III, who is also a physical education teacher at Bowling Green Elementary.
The Lady Cavs started the season with 15 players, but lost two to the varsity team and two other players were not able to finish the season. The season was finished with eight 8th graders, one freshmen and two sophomores.
They completed the season with an impressive 17-3 record, losing their first game to Glen Allen High 35-38, losing to Prince George High in the Christmas tournament and losing to James Monroe a week ago 33-37.
However the 8th graders at Caroline Middle School are just coming off an undefeated middle school season in which they went 15-0 for “the perfect season.” That was the first time the middle school girl’s team had gone undefeated.
The members of the team are: Emily Watters, MyKaila Smith, Devynn Mauck, NyAsia Brown, Rejon Hawkins, Kiya Fortune, Jaleah Baker, Mia Washington, Hailey Queen, Monique Johnson, Jasmine Chapman.
