Construction work is beginning to replace a bridge on westbound Route 207 (Rogers Clark Boulevard) in Caroline County that crosses CSX railroad tracks. Construction is expected to last through May 2013.
Work is now underway on the 15-month project. When complete, the new bridge will have two 12-foot travel lanes with a 10-foot right shoulder, and a 5-foot median shoulder. The contract for the project was awarded to Spotsylvania County’s J.L. Kent & Sons Inc. for $3.3 million.
Only a shoulder closure during the month of February is expected for motorists, but later in the spring a new traffic pattern will be in place that will close the westbound bridge to traffic, and route westbound traffic over the eastbound bridge, with only one travel lane in each direction. Traffic will be separated by a concrete median barrier.
The bridge, built in 1953, is rated as structurally deficient and carries a daily average of 10, 881 vehicles.
Project updates for the bridge will be posted at
