Work begins on US 301 bridge

Bridge rehabilitation work is set to begin on U.S. 301 over the Rappahannock River between Caroline and King George counties.

Starting this week, motorists may notice the appearance of construction signs at the bridge. Periodic single lane closures may be required until completion in July 2013.

The state has awarded a $5.5 million contract to Corman Construction Inc. to repair the James Madison Memorial Bridge.

The project will increase the life of the bridge by replacing the bridge parapets and will repairing the bridge deck. The construction will take place in several stages.

In late April, in the work zone on U.S. 301 will be reduced from four lanes to two lanes.

Phase one will close the northbound bridge span and divert traffic to the southbound bridge span. Phase two will close the southbound bridge span and divert traffic to the repaired northbound bridge span.

The state Department of Transportation (VDOT) will work to advise motorists of travel delays during construction.
