Broken water line leaves businesses dry

County officials say water service should be fully restored to businesses Ladysmith later today.

A broken water main this morning left businesses in the Shops at Ladysmith shopping center and others on Center Drive without water.

A contractor installing utilities along Ladysmith Road near Center Drive inadvertently struck and broke a 12-inch water main about 9:45 a.m. The broken water main resulted in low water pressure throughout the distribution system in the Ladysmith area.

County utility workers isolated the break within 45 minutes and restored water pressure shortly thereafter. Service was restored to many businesses along Center Drive within three hours, and most continued to have limited water pressure while repairs continued.

However, the Shops at Ladysmith, Giuseppe’s restaurant, and Wright’s Chapel United Methodist Church remain without water until the repairs are completed.

Utilities staff will hand-deliver boil water notices to affected water customers.
