One person was killed and four others were injured when a car traveling the wrong way on Interstate 95 collided with another automobile in Caroline County early Wednesday.

A 2003 BMW X-5 was traveling south in the northbound lanes, Virginia State Police reported.

A 1998 Nissan Sentra was traveling north in the center lane and tried to avoid the oncoming BMW, but the Nissan was sideswiped, according to State Police Sgt. Thomas Molnar.

A female passenger seated behind the Nissan driver died at the scene of injuries she suffered in the collision.

The driver of the Nissan and three other passengers suffered serious injuries, but they were not life threatening. The four were transported to a hospital.

The accident occurred south of mile marker 108 about 1:15 a.m.

The driver of the BMW, who was not injured, was taken into custody and is facing charges, said Molnar. State Police were conferring with the office of Caroline Commonwealth’s Attorney Tony Spencer, he said.

The names of the victims and the BMW driver were not immediately released.

The center and right lanes of I-95 northbound were closed about five hours, resulting in traffic being backed up about two miles.
