James Hunter, 78, of Bowling Green was found dead in the woods by a search party Sunday morning after he had been missing all night, the Caroline County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) reported.
When Hunter didn’t return from a turkey hunt, family members looked for Hunter for several hours on Saturday in the woods where he had been hunting, Major Scott Moser of the CCSO said. Relatives notified the CCSO at 10 p.m. Saturday and the CCSO organized an extensive search involving three search dog units from Spotsylvania, the CCSO and the Virginia State Police.
Caroline County Fire and Rescue volunteers, career personal and the CCSO also helped in the grid-pattern search. In addition, Hunter was well-known in the county, and friends and relatives also searched for him in the rain.
At 8 a.m. Sunday, Hunter’s body was found by volunteers in a wooded area 2.5 miles from his truck, which he had parked off Newtown Road near Sparta, Moser said. It appears that he died from natural cases, he added. He was found face-down, still holding his shotgun.
“This is a tragic situation, and our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Mr. Hunter,” Moser said.
