“Bringing customers in is one thing—keeping them in and bringing them back is another,” said Josephine Amato, co-owner of The Timbers Restaurant in Ladysmith. “We try to make everyone happy.”

Family-owned restaurant, The Timbers, won the 2014 Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence Award. Trip Advisor, the world’s largest travel site, offers this award to businesses that have been listed for at least a year that have continuously received positive reviews from its users. The reviews from Trip Advisor help to put a lot of towns, like Ladysmith, on the map for locals and travelers alike.

Resembling a cozy log cabin, The Timbers lures its patrons in with its unique, almost country-club like appearance. Once inside, customers are treated like family. Just past their impressive fireplace are two large eating areas, one containing a bar, and another large room with booths and tables. They even have tables outside for those who want to dine in the fresh air. The Timbers currently sports the only full bar in Caroline County.

Although steaks and seafood are their biggest sellers, the menu is varied with both American and Italian fare. Pizza has been their newest addition to their repertoire and has been a huge success.

“We always use fresh, quality, and in-season ingredients,” said Amato. She also stated they work hard at supporting local farmers as much as possible. Their recipes are original—simple, good, and fresh. All desserts are made in-house, with bread pudding and carrot cake being popular choices.

Not strangers to Caroline, the Amatos have been serving up tasty meals in the county for 27 years. In addition to The Timbers, which they took ownership of in 2012, they also own two other restaurants, both called Roma’s—one in Bowling Green and the other in Fredericksburg.

“It’s hard,” said Amato. “You have to fight and keep with it.”

Amato stated that even with a tough economy, it’s important for business owners to hang tight and not give up. She also believes the only way to offer consistent, quality food is to be there. Their family’s presence at their restaurants is what helps to ensure that their customers are served the same delicious meals that they expect, visit after visit.

In addition to restaurant dining, The Timbers also offers catering. “Whatever the customer wants, we can do,” said Amato. Customers are not restricted to their menu.

On most weekends The Timbers has entertainment. Live music is performed on Friday nights, and karaoke on Saturdays from 8 p.m. until close.
