Wastewater project expands midstream By C. Ruth Ebrahim
With the most recent addition of $300,000 to the Dawn Wastewater
Project, officials think they’ll be able to reach more customers in the
first phase of the sewer project.
“We’re just thrilled,” said consultant Sue Rowland. “As soon as we get
the details on the resources and how they can be used, then we’ll put
them in the mix.”
Congressional representatives of Caroline County—Congresswoman JoAnn
Davis, Sen. John Warner and Sen. George Allen—announced last week, that
more federal funds have been allocated to the Dawn project.
“There’s so many projects that don’t get any funding that [$300,000] is
a large sum of money,” said John Reid, representative for Sen. Allen.
“[The Dawn project] turned out right for us.”
When the county sought grant funding several years ago, Congress gave
Caroline $700,000 in EPA monies to be used directly for constructing
the decentralized system in Dawn.
Though county officials don’t know for sure, they suspect the most
recent allotment will also be earmarked for construction costs.
County Administrator Percy Ashcraft said he would know more details
about the recent allocation—and how much of a local match Caroline will
have to make—soon after the holiday weekend.
On Monday, Reedy Church District Supervisor Maxie Rozell—who represents
the Dawn area—said the county still isn’t sure how they will be able to
use the $300,000. However, he said the project needs to go forward as
planned.
“Right now, we really need to concentrate on taking what we have and
getting something that works,” Rozell said. “It’s nice that we can
continue to add to the project, but we need to get a foundation right
now.”
