Golf tees off at Caroline High
By Terry L. Norton, Staff Writer

If all goes well, Caroline High School will start its 2005/2006 school year with a new team sport.

Athletic Director Jim Blanton is looking for players and a coach to make up a co-ed Golf Team that will start practice in the new school year.

Four students have expressed an interest, but Blanton needs six, so he is looking for young men and women golfers in grades 9 through 12. Some of those interested golfers presently play football but will have to make a choice between two, says Blanton.

Try outs for the golf team takes place Aug. 8, but Blanton wants to have everyone in place by the end of February.

The team also needs a coach, a position the director also wants to fill by the end of the month.

The position is first offered to school system employees, then is opened to people outside the system.

The only costs connected with the sport would be transportation to the golf courses and the coaching stipend. Superintendent of Schools Stanley Jones recognizes it will require an increase of $6,687.60 to the yearly school budget.

Mattaponi Springs Head Golf Professional Neil Massey says the course will provide the team with practice ranges and greens for the team and be the Host Course for home tournaments. He says it is their way of being a good community neighbor.

The Golfers will play a regular district schedule as well as invitationals and tournaments.

Any rising 9th through 12th-grade golfers are encouraged to contact CHS Athletic Director Jim Blanton at 633-9886.
