If you hold the American Express Platinum Card, a little-known perk can turn luxury shopping into a smart value play this holiday season. The card’s Saks Fifth Avenue statement credit, split into two $50 allotments each year, can offset the steep annual fee — but only if you use it before each half-year reset. With Saks running deep Black Friday discounts, now is a prime moment to convert that credit into designer goods, travel gear or gifts.
How the Amex Platinum Saks credit actually works
The Saks credit for Amex Platinum cardholders is a $100 annual benefit. It arrives as two separate $50 credits: one for purchases from January through June, and one for July through December. Enrollment is required to activate the benefit.

Because the credit resets midyear and again at year-end, the second $50 must be used before the end of December or it will be lost. That makes December a critical month to shop at Saks if you haven’t spent the second half of your credit.
Saks Black Friday Sale timing, promos and cash-back stacking
Saks is hosting its Black Friday event through Dec. 3 with discounts as deep as 70% on select items. In addition, Saks is offering a promo gift card: get a $75 Saks gift card when you spend $150. The gift-card promo runs through Nov. 29 for online purchases and through Nov. 30 for in-store buys.
You can boost the value of any Saks purchase by using shopping portals and airline shopping sites. For example, Rakuten currently returns 2% cash back on Saks orders. Some airline portals also add bonus miles for Saks buys.
- Tip: Start at a portal before you shop to earn extra cash back or miles.
- Tip: Combine the portal bonus with your Amex Saks credit to reduce out-of-pocket cost.
- Tip: Confirm that items will ship and charges will post in time for the credit to register.
