Stranger Things Season 5 is finally here, and after what felt like an eternity (okay, 1244 days, but who’s counting?), Netflix has unlocked the gates to Hawkins—and the Upside Down—once more! Fans have been waiting so long that some of us have haircuts inspired by every season. But after bingeing the first four episodes, I have to admit: all my sleepless anticipation collided with a single scene that, if not exactly earth-shattering, certainly left a mark. If you’ve been on edge waiting for answers, get ready: it’s a bumpy ride, and I know I’m not alone.
A Frenzy Years in the Making
The return of Stranger Things is nothing short of an event—picture a pressure cooker left on high for too long, with fans on the verge of imploding. The show’s ultimate season finally dropped its first batch of episodes after months—correction, years!—of speculation, analysis, and plenty of bold “I know who dies!” predictions. Netflix, never one to miss a marketing trick, sliced this final season into separate servings.
Why? Imagine these reasons:
Knicks superfan Ben Stiller skips Oscars to watch gritty win over Warriors
U.S. embassies warn: 5 new travel alerts after demonstrations spread
- Keep the fans hungry (for Eggo waffles and new plot twists).
- Convince you to hold onto your subscription just a bit longer.
- Watch the internet explode with wild theories and debates.
And explode, it did! Between November 17th and 23rd, before Season 5 even dropped, Stranger Things’ previous seasons shot back into the top 10 most-watched English-language shows worldwide, with episode views oscillating between 4.1 million and 3.1 million. Message to Wednesday and Squid Game: the Hawkins gang is here and ready to steal your spotlight! The fever is real—for die-hard fans, the promise of seeing Eleven, Will, Mike, Dustin, Lucas, Nancy, Jonathan, Steve, Robin and the rest again was worth more than a few lost hours of sleep. I’ll admit, I wasn’t among those who watched through the night, but I did devour the new episodes as soon as sunlight allowed. No spoilers here, scout’s honor!
Big Budgets, Big Expectations
It’s no secret that Stranger Things Season 5 may well be Netflix’s priciest baby yet. American outlet Puck News pegs the budget between $400 and $480 million dollars. For that kind of money, you expect spectacle, right? Funnily enough, there was so much anticipation that, at around 2am on launch night, the Netflix servers actually crashed for three minutes. Stranger Things shares this rare feat with the likes of Tyson vs. Paul. Some persistent issues lingered for a select few folks, but nothing to upstage the drama happening in Hawkins.
The big question: did these first episodes live up to the mania? Personally, I had a good time—the thrills, tension, the tension-filled moments where I forgot to breathe—but there was frustration too. The city of Hawkins, still under military quarantine 584 days after Season 4’s finale, sets the scene. Eleven and her ragtag group are clearly united with one goal: end Vecna. This common mission injects fresh energy into their relationships; after all, we’ve been watching some of these characters grow up for nearly a decade!
Showdown in Hawkins: Excitement and a Stumble
Episodes hover around an hour and are packed—some more than others. Episode 1 and Episode 4 in particular fire off information salvos that leave your brain buzzing with questions. That’s part of the fun, but also part of the frustration. I spent much of my viewing glued to the screen, eyes peeled for clues. Of course, no hard feelings to the showrunners for splitting things up, but oh, the agony of having to wait weeks for answers! At least the pacing is well-managed, and the editing keeps things flowing even across these lengthy chapters.
Some bright spots:
- The plot has ditched the endless side quests (looking at you, Hopper in military camp).
- Hints of a return to the horror vibe that made Season 3 so beloved.
- A couple of properly intense battle scenes: satisfying proof the Duffer Brothers are going all in for the grand finale.
Tension remains, even if these episodes aren’t as violent as those in Season 4. Expect a few wild situations and conveniently timed plan-ruining events—it’s classic Stranger Things.
Reception for this start? Pretty stellar: 87% critic score and 92% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. But—there’s always a but—here comes the kicker. One of the last scenes in Episode 4 threw me for a loop. I’m not venturing into spoiler territory, but let’s just say it circles back to one of the show’s weakest, least-developed ideas. The Duffers decided to bring it back for Season 5, giving it a second run. Will they pull it off? I’m rooting for them, but right now, it’s my top gripe.
The Takeaway: Frustration, Anticipation, and What’s Next
Despite the bumps and a big questionable call in Episode 4, Stranger Things Season 5’s debut chunk is still a fun ride. The mounting questions and cliffhangers might leave you gnawing your nails down to the nub, but if anything, that’s proof of the show’s power: we want to analyze, decode, and live the story together. For now, I’ve got my calendar marked—December 26th for Part 2.
So, was it worth the years-long wait? For the most part, yes. Just don’t blame me if you end up pacing circles until the next release: Hawkins has that effect on us all.
