Deadliest Catch cast member reveals horrific details behind Todd Meadows’ death

Show summary Hide summary

Deckhand Trey John Green III has given a vivid, firsthand account of the sudden accident that claimed 25-year-old Todd Meadows aboard the Aleutian Lady in late February. His description paints a startling scene: a crew hustling to empty crab pots in near-freezing air when one of the heavy traps tipped over the rail with a man still inside.

How the accident unfolded on the Bering Sea

The boat was roughly 170 miles north of Dutch Harbor when the mishap occurred on Feb. 25. Green says the ocean that afternoon felt unusually calm. The air and spray were almost at freezing temperatures.

Crew members were taking turns standing inside the rigid traps used to sort crab. Green says Todd Meadows climbed into one such pot to work through the catch.

The pot weighed about 900 pounds. Green describes a split-second moment when the trap slipped and went over the rail back into the water with Meadows inside.

Immediate aftermath and what crew members saw

Deckhands reacted in shock. Green recalls hearing shouts and seeing the pot leave the deck with Meadows still inside. He sprinted aft and climbed onto the remaining pots.

  • Green found Meadows in the water nearby, actively trying to stay afloat.
  • Other crew members scrambled to deploy rescue gear and call for help.
  • Designated rescue swimmer Steve Porter reached Meadows and brought him back aboard.

Green says Meadows was only in the freezing water for a few minutes before he was retrieved. But when Porter hauled him back onto the vessel, Green described his body as lifeless.

Rescue attempts and decisions made at sea

Crew members performed CPR and used a defibrillator. They continued efforts for an extended period.

  1. Immediate retrieval from the water by rescue swimmer.
  2. CPR and use of an automated external defibrillator.
  3. Prolonged resuscitation attempts lasting roughly half an hour to 45 minutes.
  4. Decision to preserve the body in a freezer while returning to port.

Green said the Aleutian Lady was still about 12 hours from Dutch Harbor when the crew concluded their onboard efforts. Because of the distance, they wrapped Meadows in a tarp and placed him in the freezer for transport.

Safety gear, on‑deck practice, and lingering questions

One detail Green highlighted was that none of the crew, including Meadows, were wearing lifejackets at the time. He maintained the crew did everything they could during the rescue.

This point raises broader safety questions about procedures for entering pots on deck and the use of personal flotation devices during sorting operations.

Prior injury and unknown cause of death

Meadows’ mother told media he had suffered a head injury about a month earlier while working on the same vessel. He reportedly sustained a concussion and took time at home to recover.

It remains unclear whether that earlier head injury contributed to the fatal incident. An official cause of death has not been released.

Was the incident filmed? Discovery Channel and production

Green said the Discovery Channel was filming the crew as Season 22 of the reality series neared the end of shooting. He alleged that the events that day were recorded.

A Discovery spokesperson declined to elaborate, saying the matter is part of an ongoing U.S. Coast Guard inquiry and the network is cooperating.

U.S. Coast Guard investigation: scope and process

The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed it is investigating the incident. A representative described the probe as thorough and methodical.

  • Investigators will compile evidence and reconstruct a timeline.
  • They will seek factors that led to the casualty.
  • The probe will examine errors, equipment failures, or misconduct.
  • Findings are not released while the case remains open.

The Coast Guard emphasized that the investigation has no set timeline and aims to recommend steps that prevent similar accidents.
