MILFORD – Four Lady Cavaliers scored in double figures to launch the 2011-12 season with a win, and two newcomers to the team immediately established their presence.
Junior Shannon Mosby scored 22 points to lead host Caroline to a 68-33 win over King William. Mosby, playing at the shooting guard position for the first time, was 4-of-4 from 3-point range as well as 4-of-4 from the foul line, and she also tallied five assists to lead the team.
The contest was notable for the performances of two newcomers to the team, sophomore Nikia Robinson and freshman Jazmen Moore. In their debut varsity games and starts, Robinson notched a double-double with 12 points and a team-high 14 rebounds, including nine on the offensive end of the floor. Moore, playing at point guard, where Mosby held court the past two seasons, scored 14 points.
The Cavaliers also got 13 joints from senior Tasha Johnson.
Coach Tim Marshall said he was “very impressed” with the performances of Robinson and Moore. “Actually, we set goals before we hit the floor. Each one of them met their goals,” he said.
The Lady Cavaliers grabbed 45 rebounds for the night but committed 23 turnovers.
The team was without the services of senior Rakeisha Heckstall and sophomore Bo Hayes. Heckstall suffered a sprained ankle in a pre-season scrimmage, and Hayes also has been recovering from an injury. Marshall hopes Hayes will be released to play again when she has a follow-up appointment with her physician Dec. 12.
“Bo Hayes is really going to help (on) the inside with Nikia when she gets back,” said Marshall.
The Lady Cavaliers were scheduled to host Lancaster on Monday of this week and travel to Essex on Thursday.
Next week, Caroline will visit King William on Monday and then begin Battlefield District play by hosting Courtland Tuesday and visiting Spotsylvania Friday.
