The Caroline High School Lady Cavaliers picked up a couple of nonconference wins against 1-A opponents in preparation to taking on two opponents in the Battlefield District this week.
The team’s starting guards, junior Shannon Mosby and freshman Jazmen Moore, provided the one-two punch in both games last week.
Mosby, who starts at shooting guard, scored 25 points to lead the host Lady Cavaliers past Lancaster 53-45 on Monday, and Moore, the starting point guard, added 19 points.
Both players scored 16 points as Caroline overpowered host Essex, 52-24, on Thursday.
Mosby and Moore were the only players to score in double figures in the two contests, which were marred by the team’s low field goal percentage. The Lady Cavs shot 15-of-52 from the field (28 percent) against Lancaster but improved to 19-of-50 (38 percent) against Essex.
Sophomore Nikia Robinson continued to establish herself as a player to be reckoned with under the boards; Robinson pulled down nine rebounds against Lancaster and eight against Essex to lead the team in both games.
Caroline led both games throughout, and Coach Tim Marshall used the opportunities to get playing time for all the Lady Cavaliers as Caroline improved to 3-0 overall.
Against Lancaster, Moore was 2-3 from 3-point range, and she and Mosby also led the team in steals – Mosby with six and Moore with four.
Caroline took a 12-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and built it to a 25-16 advantage at intermission. Lancaster fought back after Caroline’s 36-22 lead at the end of the third quarter.
The Lady Cavaliers were 15-31 from the foul line. They committed 29 turnovers and collected 29 rebounds.
Sharda Deane scored 13 points to lead Lancaster, and Shamerah Taylor and Aaliyah Morris-Lee both added 11 points.
Against a weak Essex team, the Lady Cavaliers jumped out to a 23-3 lead after one quarter and held a 29-7 margin at the half. Robinson and Morgan Woody each had three steals to pace the team.
The Lady Cavaliers improved their free throw shooting; they were 11-of-26 from the foul line.
The team also controlled the ball better against the Lady Trojans, committing only 11 turnovers. The Lady Cavs pulled down 34 rebounds.
The Lady Cavaliers received some other good news last week with sophomore Bo Hayes being released by her physician to resume play. In addition, senior Rakeisha Heckstall, recovering from a severe ankle sprain, has been cleared to practice again.
Caroline was scheduled to visit King William on Monday of this week and then to open district play by hosting Courtland on Tuesday and visiting Spotsylvania on Friday.
Next week the Lady Cavaliers host Essex on Monday and host James Monroe on Tuesday before the Christmas break. They will participate in a tournament at Patrick Henry Dec. 28-30.
