Lady Cavs falter against JM

The Caroline Lady Cavaliers easily defeated Essex but suffered a thrashing at the hands of James Monroe.
Jazmen Moore scored 17 points to lead host Caroline to a 50-22 non-conference win over Essex on Monday of last week while Keyontae Williams scored 24 points to pace the visiting Lady Yellow Jackets to a 71-49 Battlefield District triumph on Tuesday. The split put the Lady Cavs at 1-2 in district play and 6-3 overall.
James Monroe, which led throughout the game and held a 39-31 advantage at the half, exploded in the third quarter while the Lady Cavs struggled. The Lady Yellow Jackets executed fast breaks to perfection, scoring points that went unanswered by Caroline. With 2 minutes left in the quarter, Williams, who shot 69 percent from the field, drove hard and fast to the basket and sank a spectacular hook shot. Caroline failed to score until the final 52 seconds of the quarter, and by then the Lady Yellow Jackets had extended their cushion to 26 points.
Holding a 27-point lead with 2:31 left in the fourth quarter, James Monroe sent in reserves to finish the game.
Caroline played respectable in the first half, pulling to within six points at times during the second quarter.
Akira Jones added 19 points for James Monroe and Sierra Leacock, who shot 70 percent from the field, 18 points.
Shannon Mosby scored 22 points to pace Caroline and Bo Hayes added 10 points.
James Monroe out-rebounded Caroline 31-10 and recorded 10 steals compared to two for Caroline. The Lady Yellow Jackets shot 54 percent from the field and the Lady Cavaliers, 34 percent.
The Lady Cavaliers easily handled Essex, leading comfortably throughout the game. Holding a 39-16 lead at the end of the third quarter, Coach Tim Marshall used reserve players in the fourth quarter.
Mosby was the only other player to score in double figures, adding 12 points.
Caroline pulled down 23 rebounds and made 20 steals but shot only 25 percent from the field.
This week Caroline was scheduled to play in a tournament at Patrick Henry High School Wednesday-Friday.
