Trained and certified volunteers will prepare and electronically file federal and state (Virginia only) 2011 personal income tax returns from Feb. 1-April 15 at branches of the Caroline County Library.

The free service, offered by appointment, will be provided at the Bowling Green, Ladysmith, and Dawn branches of the library.

The service is co-sponsored by the Caroline County Library and AARP. You do not have to be a member of AARP in order to receive the service.

All returns prepared will be filed onsite electronically.

People who want the service must come in person. For married couples filing jointly, both spouses must come to the same site.

People will be greeted by a client facilitator and asked to present the required identification, Social Security cards for all persons listed on the return (including children and other dependents) and a government-issued photo ID (Virginia driver’s license or ID card, passport, or military ID card).

Both forms of identification will be checked before volunteers provide the tax service. This is a requirement of the Internal Revenue Service.

A spouse or a personal representative must bring a power of attorney document for a

disabled or other incapacitated person.

In addition, people who make appointments for the service should bring the following with them: copy of 2010 tax return, all W-2 and 1099 forms issued to them, and all other documentations of income sources and-or deductions (taxes paid, mortgage interest paid, charitable contributions, etc.). The documents should be sorted and organized prior to the appointment.

The service is by appointment and may be arranged by calling: Bowling Green, (804) 633-5455; Ladysmith, (804) 448-0357; Dawn, (804) 632-8341. Walk-ins will be accommodated as time is available.
