MILFORD – A documentary film about the Richard and Mildred Loving case will be screened for an invitation-only audience at the Caroline Community Services Center on Saturday.

The Lovings, an interracial couple, married in 1958 despite Virginia’s anti-miscegenation laws. They were arrested in their Caroline County home for the crime of ‘mixed marriage,’ convicted, and banished from Virginia.

With help from the American Civil Liberties Union, the Lovings fought back. Ultimately their legal case changed history when the U.S. Supreme Court overturned bans on interracial marriage in 16 states in 1967.

“The Loving Story” is an HBO Documentary Films and Augusta Films production. Made possible in part by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the documentary will debut on HBO at 9 p.m. Feb. 14.

The documentary combines newly discovered and never-before-seen vintage film and photos of the Loving family shot in 1965 and a compelling present-day interview with the Lovings’ daughter, Peggy Fortune, neighbors, police and their young, intrepid ACLU lawyers, Bernard S. Cohen and Philip J. Hirschkop.

A reception at 4 p.m. will kick off the invitation-only event on Saturday, and the screening will be held at 5 p.m.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion at 6:30 p.m. featuring Fortune, Cohen, and filmmakers. The panel will be moderated by Kent Willis, executive director of the ACLU of Virginia.
