Cool heads prevailed at Caroline High School’s season opener for the boys’ varsity basketball program Wednesday night with the Cavaliers putting on a clinic for the visiting Trojans of Midlothian. The opening game of the Conference 20 Tournament showcased the Cavaliers with a 66-41 triumph.

A stiff Caroline defense caused Midlothian to make mistakes as the Cavaliers came out immediately with an intensity that put the Trojans back on their heels. Working the defense sparked the offense as the Cavaliers showed they had a game plan which allowed them to move about the court without hesitation.

Midlothian, a team not to be taken lightly, took advantage of Caroline in the first half of the second quarter as the Cavaliers began to get sloppy with their play, cutting down a 10-point deficit to two points. At the midway point of the second quarter, Caroline got back on their game and it was all Cavalier basketball from then on out as their lead went up to nine at half time with the score Caroline 30, Midlothian 21.

The second half continued to show off the 2014-15 edition of varsity basketball at Caroline, and the game ended with the score Caroline 66, Midlothian 41.

Leading the Caroline effort was Mark Loving with 18 points, followed by Darius Young with 15 points. Vondell Green added nine rebounds and seven assists to his 14 points. On the boards, Shareef Gardner made his presence known with an aggressiveness for rebounds that added to the game’s excitement.
