The annual Bowling Green Christmas Parade of Lights will brighten the town with holiday cheer Saturday, Dec. 13, at 5 p.m.
“When folks reach their limit with big-box retail madness, they can retreat to Bowling Green and enjoy the comforts of a family-friendly event that showcases the charm of a small town coming together in the spirit of the holiday season,” said Jo-Elsa Jordan, events coordinator for the Town of Bowling Green.
Parade-goers can expect an array of illuminated floats and vintage and commercial vehicles. Marching units will entice with practiced maneuvers, and holiday music will be heard throughout performances. Santa Claus will make an appearance being pulled by a horse-drawn sleigh.
The Mellow Fellows of Park Avenue, an all-male a cappella group, will grace the town with their gift of song from the historic Courthouse lawn. This Richmond-based quartet featuring Jacob Devol, Forrest Glass, Malcolm Jones, and Ryan Blevins will harmonize familiar Christmas carols, adding to the enchantment of the evening.
Main Street Bowling Green businesses will have more than just the front row seat this year. Not only will storefronts be adorned with festive trimmings, but they will also offer tasty treats and unique holiday finds. Other establishments can also help light up the parade with a merry ride down Main Street on their custom floats.
“The parade is an opportunity for companies and organizations to enhance (their) presence in the community by participating in the unique float procession,” said Jordan.
One of the major changes in this year’s parade, which will put a strong focus on the business district of Bowling Green, is the direction of the parade procession.
The line-up, previously on Broaddus Avenue, has been changed to Maury Avenue, south of Milford Street. The parade entries will head north on Main Street from Maury, terminating at Oak Ridge Street. By moving the parade line-up, there will be no major thoroughfares blocked as holiday travelers try to enter the town.
In addition, the awards ceremony will be at Roma’s Italian Restaurant, 114 West Broaddus Avenue rather than at the Town Hall.
Maury Avenue will be closed to non-residents beginning at 3:30 p.m.
Inclement weather will not extinguish the efforts of participants. A rain date is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 14, at 5 p.m.
