After two seasons at Caroline High School, head football coach Jeremiah Ross has resigned.
When Ross came to Caroline two years ago, he was the school’s fourth football coach in five years. The previous coach, Gene Boley, stepped down after coming under fire from parents.
Ross submitted his resignation last week and is looking around the area for other positions. Ross reportedly may leave Caroline prior to the school year ending if a position becomes available.
“Coach Ross improved the team in a lot of areas, winning four games this year and making an appearance in the regionals,” said Paul Heizer, CHS athletic director. “The fact that there are a lot of good players returning next year makes this position very attractive.”
Heizer commented that several people have contacted him already and that he sees no problem in finding someone suitable for the position.
Concerned with the further development of such players as Keyshawn Johnson and quarterback Rasharrd Harris, in addition to other young returning players, Heizer said that they were looking for someone who will not only be able to help develop the present talent, but also be able to build the program so that it will play to the strengths of the team in any given year.
According to Heizer, the interview process for a new coach should start around the middle of January and wrap up by the first part of February 2014. The position was advertised on the Caroline County Public Schools website.
Ross was not available for comment.
Before coming to Caroline, Ross had been an assistant coach at Western Carolina University in North Carolina. He also had been head football coach at a high school in California, his native state. While in college, he was a three-year starter as offensive tackle at Fresno State.
He was attracted to Caroline because of its rural nature.
