The Caroline High School 2014 golf team had one of the best, if not the best, seasons in school history, finishing with a 13-2-1 record.
The losses were to Deep Run, a perennial state champion, and King William, who showed their strength in the conference tournament by the number of golfers representing the school.
According to Coach Frank Dow, key wins included defeating Culpeper High School three times—at home, away, and on a neutral course. Culpeper has been District Champions for about the past five years. Two victories over Hanover High School were also key.
Dow stated that many Caroline golfers do not start playing until high school, so the record this year means so much more than if they had been playing longer. Collin Hess, shooting a season low of 36 over nine holes, went to the conference tournament where he finished eighth with an 81, the low being 78, followed by six golfers at 79.
In regional action, Hess shined, finishing 22nd out of all teams and individuals (72 players) and sixth out of individual qualifiers, of which there were 24 players. After a tough start on the first three holes, Hess was just three over par on the final 15 holes the second day.
“It was an impressive display of toughness and personal pride,” remarked Dow. “Most high school kids would have folded with that start. He did not and represented Caroline High Golf in a most positive fashion. I’m very proud of his efforts and performance.”
Rounding out the top four for the Cavaliers were Gaby Rivera, Cate Cooper, and Ryan Hickman. This season found all four showing great improvement, shooting in the 30s as opposed to last year’s averages in the 40s.
Consistency was a big key to the success of Caroline this year. According to Dow, all four worked hard and had fun representing Caroline High School well, sharing medaling honors throughout the year. Rivera and Cooper were in the qualifying round for the girls state championship. All four were super competitors.
Next season, a strong, competitive group returns including junior Cate Cooper, freshman Travis Compher, junior Chris Marshall, and sophomore Collin Knowles.
