Caroline Historical Society Holds July Open House

Caroline residents poured into the Sidney King Art Center in July 23 to view the Caroline Historical Society’s WWI and II exhibits.  Of special interest was the alcove of photos of men and women who served in World War II. Approximately 460 individual military photos were printed from wooden blocks or “cuts” that were used by The Caroline Progress during the World War II years. Wayne Brooks, CHS President, and Gary Billingsley of Billingsley Printing in Fredericksburg worked two weeks to print and organize these photos for display.

Visitors gathered in the large art center meeting room to share stories of their experiences in the armed forces, to reminisce about times they attended Caroline schools “back in the day”, and to honor two WW II veterans who were guests at this summer open house.

James Farmer and David Garrett, both WW II Navy veterans, were recognized for their service to our country.  President Brooks gave each an authentic WWII “ruptured duck” veteran    Bernard Collins who lived in Ideal, Virginia, here in Caroline, remembered the war years.  He mentioned Jimmy Farmer’s experiences in both the European and Pacific Theaters of Operation. A multitude of questions were asked.

Refreshments were served. Folks viewed Civil War murals of Sidney King on exhibit and spent time looking at the Historical Society’s WW I and II exhibits.  The displays cover Caroline’s participation during the wars showing “home-front” photos and memorabilia, vintage photos of WWI aviation contributed by Kathy Burchell and taken by her uncle, manikins dressed men in authentic uniforms, posters, and display cases filled with items used by our military during the 1940’s.

More activities are planned on September 21 and 22, when the State of Virginia WW I and II History Mobile visits the Bowling Green Town Hall. In addition, a “Big Band” dance and concert is planned for the evening of September 23 at the Town Hall (former USO building). Music will be provided by the Fredericksburg Big Band. Tickets are available for $12 in advance and $15 at the door.
