Field hockey at Caroline High School has had a strong year in 2015, winning more games this season than in several of the previous years combined, according to Coach Greg Trainum. After a slow 0-3 start, the Lady Cavaliers have won three of their last five games to improve their record to 4-6 through last week.
The first game for Caroline came as a loss to J. R. Tucker on Aug. 26 to the tune of 0-3, followed by another 0-3 loss to Louisa on Sept. 1. Seven days later the Cavaliers fell victim to Eastern View by a score of 0-12.
Coming fresh off a 2-1 win over J.R. Tucker on September 15, Caroline went into tournament play at Highland Springs High School, losing to Hopewell 2-0, despite outshooting the Blue Devils. In a consolation game, the Lady Cavs easily handled Highland Springs 5-1 to finish third in the tournament.
The week following the tournament proved to be a busy one for the Caroline ladies, beginning with a contest against King George on Tuesday, Sept. 22 in which Caroline was defeated 6-0. On Wednesday Northumberland succumbed to the Lady Cavs by a score of 1-0. Continuing their winning ways, Caroline avenged a loss to Louisa High School with a score of 2-0.
Caroline had 20 shots on goal versus two for Louisa. The winning streak came to an end on Friday as the Lady Cavs dropped a game to Spotsylvania 2-0.
Top scorers this season are Hannah Cranford, Guin Unterbrink, Sydnei Robinson, Madison Coleman and Kasey Baker. Senior Cassandra Cooper, an all-around player and excellent athlete, has worked the scoring for Caroline with her assists. The defense held strong behind the skills of Abby Crawford, April Berry, sweeper Brayden Hall and Jessalyn Swanton.
“This year has been a true team effort,” said Trainum. “The players as well as the coaches have all come together this season. Assistant Coach Ashley Lam, who has a lot of playing experience, has been particularly helpful.”
Relationships between players and coaches have been very strong this year. Trainum said he has coached the team with the idea that they are here to win, and this season has shown the validity of his philosophy. With the strength of the underclassmen on the team, it appears that Cavalier field hockey can only get better.
