Winter sports are in full gear with teams beginning play in conference games. Both the high school and middle schools are finding their schedules full.
The Caroline Middle School Eagles basketball team showed their stuff Jan. 9 in the King George Winter Tournament, winning it for the third year in a row. The two tournament game victories improve their record to 6-2 as they ride a four-game winning streak.
It was a long day for the Eagles, beginning with a 10 a.m. 48-41 victory over Culpeper. Top scorers for Caroline were Kaylen Taylor with 15 points and Sivon Pleasant scoring 13 points. At 1:30, Caroline fought the good fight against King George in a nail biter in which they won the tournament championship by a score of 49-43. Again Taylor, with 12 points, and Pleasant, with 13 points, led the Eagles in scoring along with Koby Mertz, who contributed an additional 12 points. Taylor, Pleasant, and Mertz were awarded Tournament MVP status.
Caroline Middle School is reported to have the best guards in the district as Taylor, Pleasant, and John Chapman put on a show that is drawing crowds to every game they play.
The Caroline Middle School excels off the court as well. Recently they went to the Bowling Green Health and Rehab Center, playing bingo and visiting with the residents there. Coach Minor arranged this trip to give the players a broader viewpoint of what goes on in the community around where they live, in addition to letting people see the quality of young people that attend Caroline Middle School.
In other basketball news, varsity head coach Antoine Johnson said there was little to report. The Cavaliers game against the James Monroe Yellow Jackets showed poor play on the part of Caroline. The final score was 82-52 in favor of James Monroe. The Cavaliers record goes to 4-5 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
The boys’ varsity basketball team visits Mountain View on Jan. 14, followed by a visit by Chancellor on Jan. 15. Jan. 19 finds the Cavaliers at Spotsylvania. The road trip continues as Caroline travels to Louisa on Jan 20, and then home to host Courtland on the Jan. 21.
On Jan. 15, the girls’ varsity travels to Chancellor for a conference game. The Lady Cavs will begin a home stance on Jan. 19 against Spotsylvania, followed by a contest against Louisa County, also at home. On Jan. 22, there is an away game with Courtland.
The wrestling team will go to a Wrestling Invitational at John Randolph Tucker Jan. 15 and 16. They will take on John Randolph Tucker in the initial stages of the match at 8 a.m. Jan. 20 finds the Cavaliers at Spotsylvania for a quad meet against Spotsylvania, Essex and George Wythe of Richmond.
On Jan. 22, Caroline will participate in a swim meet at the King George YMCA against the Chancellor, King George, and Spotsylvania swim teams.
