Football Day Declared In Ashland October 4th

September 25, 1969

Saturday, October 4th has been designated ‘football day’ in the town of Ashland.

The celebration, which will center around the special Randolph-Macon College centennial day football game, will be held in combination with all schools in the Ashland and Hanover area.

A proclamation noting the events was issued this week by mayor Meade A. Jones in the following proclamation.

“Whereas collegiate football has completed 100 years of growth and development as one of America’s greatest spectator sports, and ;

Whereas football has long been a sport by which many young men have been taught not only priciples of good atheletics but also necessary lessons of good sportsmanship and team work;

Whereas Ashland has cherished for many years the participation of its area schools and Randolph-Macon College in the game of football;

“I therefore, proclaim that the week of September 28 to October 4 shall be Ashland Football Week.

“I urge all citizens of Ashland to support area high school teams in their games during the week and to attend the special College Centennial Day football game at Randolph-Macon College on Saturday, October 4.

“Meade A. Jones, Mayor of Ashland.”

The Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets will play Towson State College in their home field October 4 at 2 p.m. in the conference game.
