Some of the highlights among the meeting included the recognition of the Boy Scout Troops 1421, the possibility of a plaque honoring the Richard and Mildred Loving being placed within Caroline County and the future of the FRED bus transit in Caroline County.
Following the invocation and the Pledge of Allegiance, the Board proposed a new amendment to the agenda discussing the possibility of the Loving memorial being replaced to Caroline County or creating an additional plaque that will be placed within the County.
Following the proposal and discussion of the additional amendment, the Board honored the Boy Scout Troop 1421 for their service as many participated in the cleanup of the Mattaponi River. From the last meeting, the Board decided to postpone the discussion of the Recreation Advisory Committee until the meeting on Tuesday. Donnell Howard, the Director of Parks and Recreation in Caroline discussed with the Board about possible improvements that can be made to help get the community more involved in the program.
The meeting then went on to discuss the future of the Fredericksburg Regional Transit in Caroline. Statements from Wendy Kimball, the Director of Public Transit, Rodney White, the Assistant Director of Public Transit and other volunteers from FRED Transit board were given which discussed the pros of keeping the service in Caroline. Discussion arose about the possible reduction or elimination of the services offered in Caroline and at the end of the discussion, the Board and representative of FRED Transit agreed to extend the service for one year. During the one-year extension, the Board and FRED transit hope to discuss possible solutions that will help gain customers and possibly more stops/routes.
Next, there was a discussion about the rejections of bids for constructions when it comes to the Fire and Rescue logistics and storage building, which was approved. Then there was a discussion about making the Caroline Library a county department. The discussion spoke about a change from being a non-profit organization to a county department where those working for the library would be considered county employees.
Another main discussion from the meeting discussed the possibility of using insurance proceeds to buy a replacement patrol car for the police department.
The meeting ended with the discussion of informational and calendar events and followed with a closed meeting. The next Board of Supervisors meeting will take place on Tuesday, July 11 at the Caroline Community Center.
