Just recently, a new business came to Ladysmith that offers a different approach to going to the gym. In March, M2 Fitness was brought to Ladysmith located in the Ladysmith Commons after having another location in Fredericksburg. Faye Krause and Michael Penney manage the Ladysmith location and also lead the workout sessions and teach nutrition classes.

The services that M2 Fitness offers ranges from many different types such as personal training, small and large group training and boot camps. The workouts at M2 are circuit training and high intensity based that includes weight training and cardio. Among the most popular types of workouts, Penney, a certified personal trainer, shares that the boot camps are the most popular as it is a group workout and helps the clients build relationships with one another as the sessions progress. With the boot camp workouts, they are built on a six-week progression and focus on different muscle groups throughout the sessions.

Krause, a registered dietitian, teaches nutrition classes ranging from small groups to one-on-one meetings. “ I try to help people learn how to use their own body signs of hunger and fullness to determine how much to eat and when to eat,” says Krause. For each client who works with Krause on nutritional habits, they will discuss any challenges the client may have faced with nutrition that can include past history with dieting, family history, and just general challenges anyone can experience with nutrition. Krause takes on a holistic approach when it comes to leading nutritional classes and encourages clients to feel satisfied and rather than feeling full.

With the combination of fitness and nutritional classes, the goal of the M2 Fitness is to work with clients over an extended period of time in order to reach their goals. “With M2, our goal is to provide you with the tools needed to reach your goals,” says Krause. As clients begin their time at M2, they will first complete an assessment that will help track each client’s improvements. Within the assessment, it will keep track of height, weight, body mass index, body fat percentage and take a look at health history and fitness goals for each client. At M2, it’s about seeing the relationship between exercise and nutrition and the progress that each client makes.

When asked what’s the most inspiring part about working at M2, Penney shares, “ I work with people day in and day out so I can see where they struggle, where they’re happy, sad, angry or disappointed…I purposefully make them do [workouts] over and over again and it comes from being angry with themselves to looking up with wide eyes.” From the start of the client’s fitness journey, it is not only rewarding for the client but both Penney and Faye to see the client’s progression with their fitness and how they feel about their health.

One of the biggest goals of M2 is to serve as an educational guide for clients and show them how both exercise and nutrition work as a team. All of the trainers at M2 have either a degree in exercise science or a certification.
