As temperatures dropped well below freezing overnight, crews plowed and treated I-95 and primary routes throughout the 14-county Fredericksburg district. However secondary routes and subdivision streets remain snow and ice covered, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
Motorists are urged to delay their morning commute, if possible. However, if you have to go out remember to:
Allow extra time for travel.
Reduce your speed
Keep a safe distance of at least five seconds behind other vehicles.
Turn slowly.
Use extreme caution especially when traveling on bridges, overpasses, ramps and turn lanes.
The following conditions exist in the Fredericksburg District:
Fredericksburg area (Stafford, Spotsylvania and Caroline counties):
Interstate – clear
Primary and Key Secondary Routes – minor to moderate
Rural Secondary Routes/Subdivision Streets – moderate to severe
Crews have also plowed the commuter parking lots in Stafford and Spotsylvania but icy conditions exist.
Northern Neck area (King George, Northumberland, Richmond, Lancaster and Westmoreland counties)
Primary and Key Secondary Routes – minor to moderate
Rural Secondary Routes/Subdivision Streets – moderate to severe
Middle Peninsula area (Essex, Gloucester, King & Queen, King William, Mathews and Middlesex counties):
Primary and Key Secondary Routes – minor to moderate
Rural Secondary Routes/Subdivision Streets – moderate to severe

Crews will continue to work around the clock in 12 hour shifts until road conditions improve.
VDOT strives to make at least one pass through each subdivision street within 48 hours after the snow stops. Crews will also apply salt and sand for traction so that residents can drive to the main streets in their neighborhood. Crews will come back at a later time with heavy equipment to remove packed snow and ice from the pavement.
