With the rain stopping Tuesday night’s game against Courtland before it even began, the Cavalier varsity baseball team had only one game this week, and that was won rather handily against the Yellow Jackets of James Monroe by a score of 5-0 on Wednesday.
The win boosted Caroline’s record to 11-6 prior to the last week of the regular season.
James Monroe kept the game close, allowing Caroline to score only two runs until the fifth inning, when two more were added. The bottom of the sixth saw an additional insurance run added, and the game ended 5-0 with the Cavaliers scoring five runs off of five hits and no errors. James Monroe had three hits and was charged with three errors.
Winning pitcher Collin Hess worked the mound for four innings, striking out 10 Yellow Jackets before being relieved in the fifth by Adam Desjarlais. Hess and Desjarlais pitched to catcher Ryan Hickman. Hickman went from behind the plate, pitching in the seventh as closer. Jonathan Didlake caught for Hickman. Jay Chapman showed off at the plate, going 2-3 with two doubles and two stolen bases as he continued to bolster the Cavalier cause.
Hunter Stephens of James Monroe was charged with the loss, going the entire game, leading what offense the Yellow Jackets could muster, and batting 2-3. Matt Abel worked behind the plate for Stephens.
Next week is the last week of the regular season with the Cavaliers scheduled to visit King George on Monday and then host Chancellor on Tuesday for Senior Appreciation night on the final home game before the playoffs.
On Wednesday, Caroline travels to Courtland to play the game that was rained out last week.
