Tuesday turned out to be a rain day as thunderstorms settled over Courtland High School, stopping not only the varsity baseball game but the varsity softball game as well.
The next day, Wednesday, turned out much better as the Lady Cavs War Machine motored through the Yellow Jackets of James Monroe by a score of 10-0, closing the game down in the sixth inning by the slaughter rule.
The real highlight of the game was the honoring of seniors India Holmes and Blake Seals, a dynamic duo that has not only served as examples to the younger members of the squad but have also been an encouragement and push when needed, causing the Lady Cavs to play much better than many thought they would be able to, given the youth of this team.
Both Holmes and Blake have played softball not only at the high school level but in other leagues extensively for years.
Holmes is scheduled to elevate her game even farther at the college level as she enters Virginia State University in the fall with plans to play softball there.
Seal will be bolstering her experience playing softball for the University of Mary Washington.
Winning pitcher Summer Simulcik, who got stronger as the game went on, stated, “I was nervous at first because I was off my game, but after the third inning everything got better.”
Assisting Simulcik was the Lady Cavs’ excellent fielding, with the outfield backing up the tight defense provided by an infield that proved to be the undoing of the Yellow Jackets. Any attempts to hit a long ball were thwarted by the combined play of Madison Woody (responsible for two outs in the first inning), Ambrose Kelsey, and Cassandra Cooper.
Simulcik allowed only a single while walking two and striking out four over seven innings. The Cavalier bats were hot as Bria Malloy led the way hitting 3-4, scoring a run and two RBI in addition to three stolen bases.
Holmes continued her batting prowess, going 2-3 with two runs, an RBI, and two stolen bases. Cassandra Cooper’s triple added to her stats as she went 2-4 with two RBI and one stolen base.
Allison Morrison was a major contributing factor, excelling behind the plate catching as well as at the plate batting. Morrison was 4-2 at the plate scoring two runs and three RBI.
Johnson of James Monroe was charged with the loss as she accumulated 10 runs after being hit 11 times. She struck out five and walked four, hitting two batters. Shortstop Cunningham had the lone single and a stolen base.
Next week being the final week of the regular season finds the Lady Cavs scheduled to play four games beginning with Monday’s trip to Chancellor, followed by Chancellor visiting Caroline on Tuesday for their last regular season home game. Wednesday’s schedule is a trip to Courtland, with a visit to Colonial Beach scheduled for Thursday.
