The investigation remains ongoing by Virginia State Police into the fatal shooting that occurred early Friday morning (Oct. 30) in Caroline County.
At 2:40 a.m., state police responded to a report of a traffic crash near the 102-mile marker of Interstate 95 in Caroline County. A 1992 white Chevrolet 1500 pickup truck was traveling south on I-95 when it ran off the right side of the interstate and overturned off the shoulder.
Upon arriving on the scene, the trooper discovered the pickup truck’s driver, Vernon Huff, 43, of Caroline County, Va., was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Huff was flown by State Police Med-Flight helicopter to VCU Medical Center, where he died later Friday morning. His remains have been transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond for examination and autopsy.
State police are still in the process of retracing Huff’s movements leading up to the shooting and subsequent crash. At this stage of the investigation, all indications are that this was an isolated incident and there does not appear to be any immediate threat to the public’s safety..
The incident remains under investigation by the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Richmond Field Office.
All southbound lanes of I-95 were re-opened by 2:40 p.m. Friday.
